My Sister, Michelle

Life is not a fun thing. Parents always make life seem amazing and cool until you realize what it truly is. My name is (Y/N) and this was my most scariest experience. During this time, I was only Fifteen. People always told me that I was a beautiful, young native woman and others loved my personality; given the kindness and respectfulness I was told about. Including my older and younger sister, and my mom. Michelle was the oldest. She was very wise, grown up and mature for her age. My younger sister Anastasia is known for how creative she is with her words, and how she thinks. My mom Stacey, is known for how strong she can be even when her world is falling down on her. These people are my family and I love them very much. I would protect them and do all kinds of things until my life changed forever. Michelle was soon diagnosed with clinical Depression. All of us didn’t understand anything about it except for my mom. With all the confusion, we realized that this was going to be very difficult. My sister and I had no clue how we would handle it.

Throughout the rest of the school year, My family drifted away from each other. We didn’t talk much and we rarely did anything together as a family. Fights were rising between my mom and Michelle but I tried ignoring it and hiding it from Anastasia. Everyday the fights would happen more and more. It was saddening to hear them scream vulgar things to each other and telling one another “I no longer love you.” After the fights were over Michelle would just sleep. We almost never saw her awake after she moved out from the house for awhile. When she came back, She was almost never awake. I was very confused and upset but I knew I had to carry on and stay strong; even though we were falling apart. Once school ended, our lives were torn apart. We never talked to each other and Michelle was always asleep now. Our summer was very quiet and many asked how Michelle was and why she wouldn’t answer them. I couldn’t exactly tell them why because I wasn’t sure myself. Mom was very paranoid and anxious now about everything. She made me worry about her and the way she acted about things. Our entire world was hectic and silence. Like a Silent war raging on in one room. We were known as the “Family at SIlent War.”

Finally, it all ended. It was now August and very close to school beginning. In the morning on the 5th, I woke up and made sure the girls had something to eat; even if it wasn’t finished. Without knowing, Michelle forgot to take her Antidepressant and she was extremely moody. Towards the afternoon, Michelle and mom got into a fight because she forgot to do something. Now, around three p.m., it happened. I woke up to Michelle screaming in the bathroom for me. The sight i saw will never leave my mind. She was beyond pale and was covered in vomit; including the toilet. Her voice was almost gone given her crying and trying to call for me. The smell was unbearable, reeking of food, pills, and stomach acid. That’s when I realized what happened. Michelle overdosed and tried to kill herself that day. After contacting Poison Control, EMT’s arriving and taking my sister away, the words that still haunt me to this day are “Someone please save me.” “I don’t want to die.” That day was one of the most life changing experiences I’ve ever had. The only thing I did when they left with my sister was cry and I cried for who knows how long. Around Five, I made my younger sister come home to keep me company while I told her what was going on. Afterwards I called a now not so close person when Anastasia left to go back to her friends. That night I didn’t sleep at all. The only thing I could do was worry and pray that my sister was still alive.

The next two days Michelle stayed in the hospital so they could make sure that she was safe to go home. When she came home I ran straight into her arms and just cried. I was in complete bliss when I saw her. Even though she smelled like a bunch of Hospital supplies, It was the best scent ever to me. Her hair was covering my face, her chest was really cold but so relieving and the soft rumble of her breathing in and out was the world’s most most wonderful feeling the world could give me. She was right in front of me and none of it was a dream.

Such an emotional story. I am never really one to cry in sad movies or books but this really tore my heart.
